Biography

As a Speech and Language Therapist, I have worked for over 35 years in the UK and in  Africa, carrying out research and clinical work, building research capacity, helping to educate speech and language therapists and other professionals, and preparing Allied Health Professionals from the UK to work equitably in Low- and Middle-Income countries (LMICs).

My research interests have been focused particularly on the development of services for people who experience Communication Disabilities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries; understanding of and responses to, communication disability; culturally responsive services; evidence-based interventions; supporting people who experience communication disabilities in Humanitarian situations.

Chair and a founder member of Communication Therapy International (CTI), whose mission is: ‘to support professionals, including speech and language therapists from high income countries, to maximize the impact of their work with people with communication disability in low and middle income countries’.  CTI  is a Clinical Excellence Network of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in the UK.

I review for national and international peer-reviewed journals and also review research proposals and final reports for national and international  research funding bodies, including NIHR, ESRC and NRF (South Africa).

Impact

My work in Low and Middle Income Countries  and Humanitarian Contexts  has increased recognition of the prevalence and impacts of Communication Disability . Evidence from   our work with the refugee community in Rwanda  formed part of the submission of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, to the Domestic Abuse  Bill in the UK .

My work with Communication Therapy International  has supported many SLTs to work more equitably in LMICs.

Why do I teach?

I teach Undergraduate and Masters SLT students, and PhD students. I  love sharing ideas with, learning from and challenging students, encouraging them and me to develop thinking, skills and knowledge.

I teach Masters level SLT students.  I focus mainly on qualitative research methods, research project supervision and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion elated to Communication and swallowing Disability

I currently supervise six PhD students (including qualified speech and language therapists) registered at MMU. I particularly enjoy working with PGR students, supporting them to develop their research and their identity as researchers… and learning a great deal myself.
