Teaching

Why do I teach?

My aim is to encourage NHS and university clinical staff, in particular, nurses and allied health professionals, to undertake clinically applied research so that they can build a ground-swell of qualified, competent clinical researchers who investigate their area of practice to improve the health and wellbeing of their patients and clients. My publications and research funding reflect my aim to recruit and publish with and alongside them. Clinically applied research (like its partner clinical practice) requires the nurse/therapist researcher to understand and use a variety of research methods and I encourage the use of whatever methods fit the research (quantitative as well as qualitative). All health research also benefits from engaging in big data set studies as well as longitudinal cohort studies.

Why study…

It may be worth asking yourself: How often have I been told to base my practice on the evidence and, when seeking out that evidence, found that it doesn’t quite fit what you need, isn’t applicable to your work place, is based on people who do not resemble you or your patient/client group?

Then it’s worth considering studying how to make that evidence yourself.

You may say: I need to be better at working out what the evidence says and which bits I can use: pick up your desire to get involved in research there! learn about how to seek out the evidence, critically appraise and evaluate it; see whether you can apply it, ask yourself how do I contribute to that evidence so one day, someone will find my efforts and appraise them.
