Introduction - rich text

There’s a lot to think about when you move into halls of residence. We’ve taken care of some of the important bits for you. This includes insurance to help keep your possessions safe, as well as utility bills, which are included in the price of your accommodation. This page will give you more information about your insurance policy, utilities, council tax and whether you need a TV license in university accommodation.

  • Contents Insurance

By partnering with Endsleigh, the number one student insurance provider, we’ve arranged free contents insurance for all our students staying with us.

It is important you confirm your cover to ensure you understand what is and isn’t covered. When you do, you’ll be entered into a prize draw specifically for Manchester Metropolitan University students, courtesy of Endsleigh.

Visit confirm your cover to see:

    • what is and what isn’t covered
    • key exclusions – where cover isn’t provided
    • policy excess – the amount you pay when you make a claim
    • how to make claim
    • how to personalise your cover

We understand you might have a limited budget so Endsleigh have launched brand new, unique student insurance options. They have been designed to cover the risks that you may encounter while living in student accommodation and away from home.

  • TV Licence

You will need to pay for a TV Licence if you want to watch or record any live television. This includes watching on a TV, laptop, iPad, mobile phone or other device. A single licence will do if you and your housemates only watch the TV in the communal areas, but if you wish to watch TV in your own room, then you will need your own licence.

If you’re not staying in University accommodation over the summer and don’t need the licence for the full year, then you can apply for a refund for any unused part of the year (usually a block of three months). Most students would need to buy a TV Licence at the beginning of term in October to allow enough time to qualify for a refund. Alternatively, if you are moving into new accommodation, then you can easily arrange to get your licence transferred to a new address.

  • Water and Electricity

All of our accommodation includes the cost of water and electricity as standard.

  • Council Tax

Students living in Manchester Met accommodation do not have to pay Council Tax. Council Tax does not apply to properties where all adult residents are full-time students, so this is worth bearing in mind when you move into private accommodation.
