About my career

From a handful of job applications when returning Hong Kong, my Manchester Met degree helped to deliver the same number of job offerings in return. My 100% ratio between job hunting, and job offerings have included: Printing Officer at the Government Printing Department; Technical Manager at the Reed International Books; Ink Technologist at the Coates Brothers; Cadet Pilot at the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force.

Eventually I chose to start my career path with Reed International Books (now RELX). In one of my roles as a Management Representative of the quality management system, I brought my company for the first ISO 9000 certification accreditation in the Hong Kong printing industry. I also helped the Productivity Council to promote awareness of the QMS system in Hong Kong, as Principal Speaker at a HKPC/SGS joint conference. In the same year I received full company sponsorship on my MSc Quality Management studies at the HK Polytechnic University.

My top tip for students

You only live once, do not just think about it. If it is right, do it!

I’m inspired by

Mr Ken G Pearson, Lecturer, Graphic Technology Department at Chatham Building. Ken not only taught me several printing and graphic technology subjects during my undergraduate studies, but he was also my project supervisor during my final year thesis writing. He was my mentor during that period.

Why I love Manchester Met

As an overseas student from Hong Kong, I had various issues to take care of during my studies - fun, laughter and tears – while at the same time Manchester Met, as a higher education institution, offered me three years of experience, both academic and social, which was fruitful to my subsequent life, vision, values and career development. As a matter of fact, Manchester city itself is a big and superb student city - MCR Bees!
