ABOUT MY CAREER

I was seeking a part-time course that I could fit around my busy HR position in Manchester, and the MSc (Hons) Human Resource Management course was the perfect fit. I had a few recommendations from colleagues who had completed their masters at Manchester Met.

I pursued my master’s part-time while already working in my current company. The HR master’s enabled me to attain the professional CIPD Level 7 accreditation, which helped me secure a promotion overseas in Asia. The dissertation allowed me to apply the theory in practice within a real organisation, alongside developing research and analysis skills and practical elements from the course. I established a new HR department, which was a significant professional development for me.

Upon returning to the UK, I assumed a leadership role as the Head of Talent Acquisition for Northern Europe. I am responsible for the talent acquisition strategy and operations, overseeing the hiring of over 500 people annually across graduate and corporate roles.

MY TOP TIP FOR STUDENTS IS

Consider the impact you want to make. Reflect on what is personally important to you (flexibility, compensation, industry, etc.) and ensure you choose a company with a culture that aligns with your values. While the job itself is crucial, the culture usually holds greater significance. Be prepared to start in a role that will progress you into the dream role. Always inquire about what the employer can offer you and what you can expect from a long-term career.

WHY I LOVE MANCHESTER MET

I loved the team working elements of my course and the small classes enabled a much richer learning experience with ample time with course tutors. The inclusion of guest speakers also enhanced the overall educational experience.
