ABOUT MY CAREER

I had interests in both Physics and Computing, and this was one of the few places to offer the option of a combined degree. My first job after graduating was as a software programmer at Ferranti which I got following interviews with several companies arranged through the university. At the beginning of my career the programming skills I learnt were key, but as I progressed, good communication, report writing, and critical thinking were used extensively which I honed during my studies.

Today, I own and run a Managed Service Provider offering IT, telecoms, and cyber-security services. My main responsibilities are developing and ensuring the delivery of the company strategy, management and mentoring the senior management team, plus day-to-day focus on marketing and finances.

MY TOP TIP FOR STUDENTS IS

Ensure you have a clear and concise CV that shows your experience and interests. Bad grammar and typos are to be avoided at all costs. To progress, be positive, take on board advice and ultimately do a great job. If your current employer doesn’t reward you after you’ve demonstrated all this, then find one that will.
