About me

  • Job title and company: CMO @Permutable AI
  • Studied: BA (Hons) International Business Management - 2002

ABOUT MY CAREER

My goal was to study International Business, and after having looked around various universities, Manchester Met came out as a clear winner, both in terms of course provision and the overall dynamics at the university. Also being from London it was the chance to base and immerse myself in a completely different region of the country which I thought was important for my development.

During my degree, I undertook a year-long placement at a digital marketing agency in London. Having this practical experience was absolutely crucial to my later career success, as it provided me with practical learning, knowledge, skill development, work ethic, and confidence.

My first job after university was a graduate role within a PR agency. I applied through the graduate scheme and worked there for 2 two years. It was an incredible opportunity to work on major brands including Budweiser, Disney and other major FMCG brands.

Currently, I am the CMO at an AI start-up in the sustainability space called Permutable AI (https://www.permutable.ai). This dynamic and fulfilling role encompasses the following:

Strategic Marketing Planning: I am responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing strategy aligned with the company’s overall goals and objectives. This includes conducting market research, competitor analysis, identifying target audiences, and defining key messaging and positioning.

Brand Building and Management: I play a crucial role in building and managing the company’s brand identity. This involves developing a strong brand image, establishing brand guidelines, and ensuring consistent brand communication across all channels. I also focus on building brand awareness, credibility, and trust within the AI industry and target market.

Lead Generation and Customer Acquisition: Generating leads and acquiring customers is a vital aspect of an AI startup’s growth. I play a key part in lead generation strategies, such as content marketing, digital advertising, events, and partnerships.

Product Marketing and Positioning: I collaborate with the product team to develop effective product marketing strategies. This includes understanding customer needs, conducting market analysis, creating compelling product messaging, and developing go-to-market strategies.

Digital Marketing and Online Presence: I lead the digital marketing efforts including managing the company’s website, optimizing SEO and SEM strategies, leveraging social media platforms, and implementing data-driven marketing campaigns.

Customer Engagement and Retention: I am responsible for fostering strong relationships with customers. This involves developing customer engagement strategies, implementing customer feedback mechanisms, and ensuring exceptional customer experiences. .

Thought Leadership and Industry Influence: As the face of the company’s marketing efforts, I play a key role in establishing our start up as a thought leader in the industry. This involves participating in industry events, speaking engagements, and contributing to industry publications.

Manchester Met helped me gain a variety of skills, but the ones that have helped me the most in my career so far have been business knowledge, analytical and critical thinking, communication and presentation skills, leadership and teamwork, strategic thinking, ethical decision making, global business perspectives, adaptability and an entrepreneurial mindset just to name a few.

MY TOP TIP FOR STUDENTS IS

Persistence! It’s brutal out there. As someone who is responsible for hiring, I would always say only go for a job in a field that you are passionate about - it will show. And always think about how you can go the extra mile when applying for a job - companies have to sift through thousands of applications so you really need to think about how you can stand out from the rest.
