for Apprentice Students
If you have aspirations of working in law or of progressing your legal career, the Solicitor Apprenticeship is your opportunity to achieve full solicitor recognition via an innovative new route.
The Solicitor Apprenticeship provides the opportunity for you to experience all the work-based training required for qualification as a solicitor. It builds on the University's experience of delivering advanced apprenticeships in legal services, which accepted their final enrollment in January 2017.
You will work full-time and study at Manchester Law School for a legal practice degree, earning a minimum salary of £12,000 per year.
Please note the programme is currently being reviewed and is unlikely to be available until September 2019.
The Solicitor Apprenticeship introduces candidates to the foundations of law and rapidly progresses their knowledge and skills. As part of the apprenticeship, participants will study a part-time LLB in Legal Practice that includes:
In years 2, 3 and 4, you will have the option to choose elective units that most closely align with your professional practice.
The end-point assessment is in the final six months of the apprenticeship after you have completed your degree, functional knowledge tests and work-based assessment.
Solicitor apprentices study a practice-focused law degree, which is delivered by online distance learning. This means, as a solicitor apprentice, there will be opportunities for you to work and study throughout England.
You will also be supported by a supervisor and a mentor in the workplace, and have regular reviews of your progress, conducted by Manchester Law School staff either in person, by phone or by video call.
Successful apprentices will achieve a full honours degree from Manchester Law School – the LLB in Legal Practice. By completing the degree, graduates would also qualify for membership of CILEx and level 6 Legal Executive status. When you complete the apprenticeship end assessment, you will have satisfied the requirements for registration with the Solicitor Regulation Authority.
You have to apply direct to an employer offering opportunities on the programme, which is due to start in September 2018.
The application process varies by employer, but your first step should be to complete our registration form and we will keep you up to date with vacancies and support.
Manchester Metropolitan University was a founding partner, along with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and leading law firms, of the Level 3 Legal Services Apprenticeship. The University has trained more than 100 new legal professionals through the Level 3 Programme, which accepted its final cohort of apprentices in January 2017.
The new Solicitor Apprenticeship builds on Manchester Met’s successful experience of delivering apprenticeships, to create a programme that allows apprentices to enter the legal profession via an innovative new route.
Deciding on the best route to a career in law is a very personal choice, some individuals would only consider the traditional university route and the benefits of this, whereas some think more seriously about this more vocational route.
The apprenticeship programme offers the opportunity to gain experience in the legal sector, earn money and achieve a legal qualification at the same time.
