Progress in Responsible and Sustainable Tourism for Development
Progress in Responsible and Sustainable Tourism for Development: The First Manchester Symposium 2017
Mounted by Manchester Metropolitan University to celebrate the United Nations’ declaration of 2017 as the ‘International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development’, this symposium also marks twenty-five years’ provision of Tourism Management higher education at Manchester Metropolitan University. Blending industry, academic and nonprofit sector speakers, the day will provide a platform highlighting and debating contemporary responses to the global sustainable and responsible tourism agenda from north-west England and further afield.
Acknowledging the breadth of the endeavour, a diverse array of speakers has been drawn together for the first time to discuss and debate innovative and exciting projects, provision and operations, each with the goal of coupling tourism activity more closely to serve twenty-first century sustainable development goals. The theme of the morning programme is ‘Tourism and Sustainable Economic Growth’, and the afternoon ‘Tourism: Sustainable Consumption and Production’.
Conference Chair Dr Chris Stone is Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management at Manchester Metropolitan University UK and an academic expert in approaches to ‘responsible’ and ‘sustainable’ tourism. He has been consulted by governments, industry, nonprofit organisations and professional bodies, is invited to speak at international conferences, and has acted as tourism external examiner for seven university institutions across UK, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.
