Manchester Metropolitan University

A little more conversation!

MORE than 1,000 people are following Manchester Metropolitan University on real-time social media network Twitter.

Twitter’s growing popularity, particularly among the under 25s, has made it the go-to medium for instant communication.

And within months of starting its official account – @ManMetUni – the University has attracted a large group of followers – over 1,000 students, prospective students, staff, partners and, bless them, other universities!

"Stepping into the Twittersphere is rather scary because we are a large institution in a quite intimate place," says Press and PR Officer Gareth Hollyman.

'Useful' and 'inspiring'

"Hopefully our followers will pick up bits and pieces they find useful or inspiring from a University community which is hugely rich in ideas and full of knowledgeable, dynamic people.”

And it’s not all about MMU, followers can pick up information about university, studying, education - even the weather!

"We had a lot of people tweeting back and forth during the recent snowstorms in Manchester, which was a good way of communicating instantly in a rapidly-changing situation," said New Media Manager Mark Shaw-Griffiths.

In addition to ManMetUni, the University has other Twitter accounts @MMUJobs, @mmu_law, @MMU_Careers, @MMUBS, @ManMetUnion, @MMUEnvironment and probably some more – let us know if you’re out there!.

Tweeting together

Research shows that social networking sites can help cultivate a sense of community, particularly among existing groups such as lawyers, scientists, student societies, alumni, people applying for a certain profession or whoever!

"We’ll be using our main Twitter feed to promote these other sites and people can retweet their information on the official site," added Gareth.
