Do placements boost degree scores?

STUDENTS who choose a placement as part of their MMU course can drastically improve their degree result.

Nine out of 10 students graduating this summer from sandwich degrees courses at MMU Business School achieved first class or 2:1 honours.

The figures – the highest ever achieved for MMU Business School – highlight the importance of real world skills and experience in a competitive graduate market.

"Placements make you highly employable and improve your prospects," says Lindsay Halliday, placement manager for MMUBS, who expects a large turnout for the forthcoming Placement Fair on November 17.

Year on the job

Analysis of more than 250 results for undergraduates who completed a sandwich course showed 91% achieved ‘good honours’ degrees, compared to an average of 62% for all UK university graduates.

The 2010 graduates who completed their placements during their third year were placed at a wide range of blue chip, small and medium-sized organisations.

Jobs were forthcoming in many sectors - automotive, finance, technology and retail and leisure - and at companies as varied as Adidas, Bentley, Exxon Mobil, Fujitsu-Siemens, KPMG, Marks and Spencer and Microsoft.

Overseas placements took students as far as Spain, China, Australia and even the Maldives!

Life-changing

Grivas Kopti, 21, BA (Hons) Advertising and Brand Management, described his placement at Walt Disney World, Florida, as ‘life-changing’.

"The Placement Office presented me with a once in a lifetime opportunity I would never have dreamed of!"

Sarah Collins, now in her final year of BA (Hons) Business (Sandwich), had a different experience but also worthwhile: "There are placements advertised around the Business School and on the placement portal but despite applying for a number of jobs, I did not get many interviews.

"The placement team helped with improve my CV also worked on my interview technique and I got an offer from the University itself working as a Recruitment Events Coordinator."

Full salary

All MMUBS courses are available with a ‘sandwich’ year between second and third years of study where students work for up to a year with a private or public organisation. Most offer a full salary.

MMU Business School is currently ranked 4th by the student website RateMyPlacement.co.uk
