IF you’re thinking of investing your money wisely, just check your financial planner went to Manchester Metropolitan!

For four years in a row the University’s finance students have scooped the UK University Challenge set by 7 Investment Management and the Institute of Financial Planning.

The 2011 winners - Joshua Guile, Tom Parkes, Carla Gardner and Sarah-Jane Davies, who study on the BA Financial Services degree, beat a second team from this university to win IFP Cup.

Josh, from Heywood in Manchester, said the Challenge was fantastic: “It gave us the opportunity to put into practice everything we have learnt throughout the course. We had to put in a lot of research to ensure that the advice we offered was the best possible for the case study.”

First job

The 20-year-old has already landed himself a job as a paraplanner with Mortgage Choice in Manchester and is also studying for a full diploma to become a mortgage adviser.

The Challenge involved teams preparing a financial plan for a client from a questionnaire and interview notes. The best plans are then presented to a panel of professionals including Justin Urquhart Stewart from firm 7 Investment Management and Lucy Courtenay from the IFP.

Oliver Princep, senior lecturer in accounting & finance at the Business School said: “The judges felt that the standards of the plans and presentations were particularly high this year.

“It was very difficult to pick a winning team as both of our teams were able to answer the judges’ questions with confidence.”

Great course

Josh added: “I would definitely recommend the MMU course to anyone looking for a career in financial planning, investment management or risk management.”

The winners will be presented with a trophy and cash prize by 7IM at their London HQ at the old Stock Exchange Building in September.
