University Alliance backs MMU Degree Apprenticeship
HIGH-tech degree apprenticeships such as those being developed at Manchester Metropolitan University have been backed by the University Alliance (UA).
Alliance universities, which includes MMU, are best placed to develop the new degrees with strong expertise in areas closely linked to the economy, according to UA.
The University is one a select group that will be offering the apprenticeships - which are fully funded and developed in partnership with industry - in business technology.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and partner firms cover tuition fees while students earn a wage and study alongside their work.
Maddalaine Ansell, Chief Executive of UA, said: “Alliance universities are well placed to help develop and implement this programme due to their strengths in subject areas closely linked to the needs of the economy such as engineering, design and digital industries.
“Working effectively with partners is ingrained within our universities’ approach, including building dynamic and strong relationships with both education providers and employers.
“We have considerable experience of working successfully with a broad range of employers to deliver highly employable graduates that are ready to hit the ground running.”
BIS has extended apprenticeship degrees to cover new disciplines.
MMU already has a successful record of training students with industry-ready skills in collaboration with employers. Manchester Law School offers the Legal Apprenticeship scheme for post-A Level students to study while employed in law firms.
The Degree Apprenticeship in BSc (Hons) in Technology Solutions is being developed across faculty in MMU combing computing and business expertise.
Dr Robin Johnson, Principal Lecturer in Marketing, Operations and Digital Business, said: “We strive to ensure our students are equipped for life after university as they begin careers or continue with further study. It is an example of our commitment to employability and developing industry-ready skills.”
