Manchester Metropolitan is the 4th most popular UK university, according to the latest figures from the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

MMU, consistently popular for its vast portfolio of courses, has received 40,223 applications for degree and other qualifications starting in September 2006, making it more “applied for” than Sheffield (32,346), Bristol (37,005) and Nottingham (37,606).

MMU attracted 10,000 more applications than any other new university.

Apart from the countless attractions of big-city Manchester, MMU is renowned for its student support and high quality teaching. Teaching has been ranked Top 10 in sport science and materials engineering, and Top 20 in business and management, sociology, nursing, education, hospitality, general engineering, drama, architecture and art & design.

Martyn Gee, on BA (Hons) Dance and Drama, said: "From the start it was obvious the lecturers here are very understanding – they give you 100%."

Tom Ward-Davies, on BA (Hons) Film and Media, said: "Of the Unis I looked at, MMU was more down-to-earth. In Manchester there’s a different experience every time you go out – you can’t ask for much more than that."

The running figure is the second highest figure ever, well above the 39,215 in 2004 and only slightly down on the record 42,426 last year which saw an 8% rise in applications.
