The Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics is one of the largest in the UK, with over 70 permanent academics. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent learning experience for our students, underpinned by research and scholarly activity.
Offering a broad range of courses covering undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes, our emphasis is on flexibility, imagination, employability skills and the ability to think critically. Ultimately, we require our graduates to have the confidence and ability to overcome any challenges they face now and in the future.
Learning support is focussed on delivering academically and professionally based education in the context of co-production with our students - that is, creating an environment whereby learning and development is created by both staff and students.
Our staff have an excellent breadth of academic and professional experience, offering students of the department outstanding opportunities to understand the subjects and the career options available. Students and staff work very closely together and students receive excellent support throughout their studies; an example of this is the award-winning AFE Student Society.
Through our staff’s leadership and advisory roles in professional organisations, we are in an ideal position to deliver ‘first and best’ information, education and advice.
Research emerging from the department actively contributes to the international pool of academic knowledge and industry practice in the areas of behavioural economics, international economic development, business performance, taxation and fiscal policy, environmental accounting, risk management and financial planning.
The quality of our provision is attested by the fact that the department is closely connected with a range of industry bodies such as:
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
The Chartered Banker Institute (CBI)
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting (CIPFA).
We are also working with major clients like BNY Mellon, PwC and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in developing and delivering tailored programmes.
In short, we deliver programmes for today, designed to equip those who will meet and overcome the challenges of tomorrow.
