Postgraduate Internships

The Postgraduate Internship Programme is an optional unit open to all Masters students who wish to apply their subject knowledge and skills within a business related role.

Undertaking a postgraduate internship not only shows future employers that you are capable of working in a professional capacity, it also enables you to gain practice credits, which will be recorded on your qualification transcript.

Some of our postgraduate students who completed internships through the scheme have successfully secured ongoing employment with their internship host after graduation.

How does the Postgraduate Internship Programme work?

Internships through the Postgraduate Internship Programme are short-term periods of work experience that can start anytime between November and early August the following year.

Internships through the scheme must be for 100 hours in length, and can be completed flexibly to fit around your academic commitments, for example, you could complete your internship part time during term time (e.g. 1 or 2 days per week), or full time or part time during University holidays and/or during the period from May to August when you will be working on your dissertation.

An internship through the Postgraduate Internship Programme may be working within an organisation’s office to support with the daily workload, or may require you to work on a specific project that the company does not have the internal resource to undertake.

Where would an internship be based?

As internships need to fit around your existing study timetable, internship employers are generally local, with a wide selection within the Central and Greater Manchester areas.

What support is available to help me find an internship through the scheme?

A dedicated Postgraduate Internship Coordinator will support you with securing an internship, by sourcing and advertising suitable roles throughout the year, offering 1-2-1 application advice and offering support around making your own speculative applications to organisations.

Can I source my own internship to assign to the Postgraduate Internship Programme?

Yes, you are encouraged to seek relevant internship opportunities independently.

The Postgraduate Internship Programme Coordinator can offer you tailored advice and support around contacting organisations and making speculative applications.

If you source an internship directly, the Postgraduate Internship Programme Coordinator will be able to advise you regarding the requirements of the Programme, and will support you in assigning your internship to the scheme wherever possible.'

Amanda Serra I Galliers : Completed internships with Havas PR, Creative Spark and Caspian Assurance

‘As a part time PR student, coming to the end of my course, I believe my work experience has given me an advantage over other candidates when applying for graduate jobs. During my course I have been an intern at Havas PR, where I wrote newsletters, pulled together client and press quotes and updated journalist databases. I then worked with Creative Spark, an integrated agency where I created blog and social media content. Currently, I am working alongside the Head of Digital Marketing at Caspian Assurance where I am utilising my marketing and PR skills in a totally different environment- insurance! The three internships I have experienced through the Internship Programme have allowed me to try completely different environments and roles within PR which has helped to give me a clear idea of the type of role I would like in the future.’

Daniel Sefton- Digital Marketing Internship with ITOL

‘The Institute of Training and Occupational Learning is an educational body providing qualifications in leadership, management and training. As a Digital Marketing Intern I worked within the marketing team promoting the brand through digital channels and contributing to the marketing strategy. My role involved using insight and analytics, construct and execute a social media strategy, produce SEO friendly posts, use CRM software and more. This internship has been particularly important in shaping my future career as I have recently been offered a full time role here upon completion of my course! My advice to students looking for work experience is to make use of the resources and support available to you and ensure that applications are tailored to each role. I was careful to tailor my CV, researching the company and breaking down what they wanted in an intern from the role specification.’ MSc Marketing (Creative Advertising)
