Reviving Dublin through Augmented Reality

Background

In November 2012, the Manchester Metropolitan University launched the Dublin AR project in collaboration with the Dublin Institute of Technology and the Dublin City Council to connect the city’s heritage with cutting-edge technology known as Augmented Reality.

Challenge

To investigate sites that can where augmented reality can add to the user experience around Dublin’s Independence Trail to prepare for the 100th year anniversary of Irish Independence in 2016.

Creative approach

The mobile application is designed to benefit tourists as well as local stakeholders across various sectors by using Augmented Reality to provide relevant information as well as enhance the tourist experience as part of Dublin’s Digital Strategy.

Outcome

A prototype of mobile Augmented Reality in the Urban Heritage Tourism context was developed to provide enhanced information to tourists. It was tested on young British tourists visiting Dublin and the overall attitude was favourable. Tourists found that it enhanced their experience.
