MetMUnch volunteers

Summary

MetMUnch is a student-led social enterprise which delivers sustainable, healthy and nutritious food information and education to Manchester Met students, staff and local communities. Led by Haleh Moravej, Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition, it educates, informs and entertains through food, fun and positive energy. From an initial 25 members, MetMUnch has grown to 133 committed participants and is still growing!

Aims of the Project

To develop student skills, improve nutritional knowledge, and make a difference in the community. It gives students the opportunity to gain practical work experience and provides skills and training that transform MetMUnchers into confident, passionate global citizens.

Outcomes and Impacts

MetMUnch is embedded into the University's Commercial Services and is to offer a creative, bespoke catering service across the university.

Student volunteers are able to gain valuble work experience – working cross-faculty at University events, running pop-up stalls, providing on-the-spot nutritional advice, personal training, blogging, art, healthy community events, or any other area MetMUnchers want to explore: MetMUnch even recently went galactic to cater for a NASA event!

MetMUnch’s commitment to sustainable food education also saw them win the EAUC National and International 2014 Green Gown Awards for Student Engagement, the Green Impact Gold award, NUS Environmental Hero 2014, and two NUS National Student Leadership Awards.

One MetMUnch volunteer commented:

"MetMUnch has allowed me to embrace opportunities such as delivering training to Greater Manchester Police, educate and support local communities, raise awareness of matters such as sustainability, carbon impact and of course my passion – Nutrition".
