Join us to kick off the Gothic Manchester Festival in style with a night of drinks and music to open 'The Gothic North' art exhibition.

Featuring multimedia works from long-time collaborators with the Festival, the Manchester Gothic Arts Group (M:GAG) and special guest Morticia.

The exhibition will run from Friday 7th October until Wednesday 30th November, free and open to the public 9am-6pm Monday to Friday, as well as being open all day Saturday 22nd October during the Gothic Manchester Festival Weekend.

The theme is 'The Gothic North' summed up by M:GAG in their inimitable style thus:
"Compasses don’t lie- they always point North. So don’t have a strop! See the sights and delights, from the town and the city to out where it’s pretty. Some say it’s grim up North and can be bobbins, minging, hanging- but it’s also dead mint, sound, sorted, buzzing and banging! So chill out, grab your keks and let us take ya on a well gothic trip. Reach the highs and lows, the ins and outs, the sick and top, the mad and bad- and everything in between. Coz this is Gothic North. Everything’s gone green. D’ya know what I mean?"

The city’s Gothic social scene, in particular the ARA night club, was the genesis for Manchester Gothic Arts Group (M:GAG). They are Matt Carson, Kolyn Amor, Liz Watkin and Neil Watkin. With Arts Council funding, Liz, Kolyn and Matt first exhibited together in 2007. Joined later by Neil, they have produced work for many exhibitions over the intervening years.

Morticia is a gothic photographic artist who has just completed a Masters in Creative Practice at Leeds College of Art. Originally from Manchester she is inspired by all things gothic and Victorian mourning culture in particular.
She uses analogue photographic processes to record remnants of the past and explore how their echoes can still resonate and disturb.
