Dr David Cooper a Patron of Campaign by Norman Nicholson Society

Dr David Cooper has been named a Patron of the public campaign by the Norman Nicholson Society to buy the poet's former home at 14 St George's Terrace, Millom, Cumbria.

The project is being co-ordinated by the Chair of the Society, Charlie Lambert, who spent many years working as a sports broadcaster for the BBC; and other patrons include the broadcasters, Stuart Maconie and Eric Robson, plus the biographer Kathleen Jones.

Dr David Cooper spent several years as Chair of the Society and remains on the committee.

In 2016, the society decided to do all they could to buy 14 St George’s Terrace, Nicholson’s old home, and develop the property so that it could become a focal point for the study of Nicholson’s writings and the promotion of his work. The property had been on the market for several months without attracting a buyer, and was in danger of falling into disrepair.

Their vision is that this house which was so important to Nicholson will be preserved for future generations; that it will inspire lovers of literature in general and Nicholson in particular; that it will encourage the study of his work and simultaneously the discussion of literature's role in a world which has an increasingly sharply-defined sense of location.

“They built a wall slowly,
A day a week;
Built it to stand.
But not stand still.
They built a wall to walk.”

Norman Nicholson, Wall, (1981).
