Lecturer in Victorian Poetry
"I loved the way that students from very varied backgrounds were given the opportunity to improve themselves and the world around them through greater understanding."
I am a Lecturer in Victorian Poetry at the University of Exeter. My teaching includes supervision and convening large modules, and designing and running smaller, elected modules. I am also allocated time to carry out my own research.
The opportunity to read literature and discuss it critically was a constant joy. I made many friends at Manchester Met including students and staff, and I enjoyed the opportunity to immerse myself in university culture through events and social activities. Although the English department at Manchester Met is quite big, the way the programme was designed made it more and more accessible as the degree progressed and I liked feeling part of a community of learning. Because I was a mature candidate and did not have A Levels I gained original access to the degree through experiential learning and I will always be grateful to Manchester Met for having initial faith in my ability to succeed academically.
Skills: Critical thinking, self-confidence, analytical approach, self-discipline
Achievements: First Class degree, Duncan Prize for achievement in and all-round contribution to the degree
Do the reading!
I'm inspired by my experience as a student at Manchester Met to regard education as a real process of social and personal change.
