Phil Davies

Playwright & Screenwriter

"What I savoured the most about my time at Manchester Met was the freedom to explore and debate and enjoy the complexities of language and the craft of writing with people who were far more intelligent than me."
What was your first job after graduating from Man Met and how did you get that role?

Working on the bar of the Royal Exchange Theatre which - although I didn’t know it at the time - was massively significant in propelling me to take my writing seriously.

What is your current role and what are your main responsibilities?

I'm currently under commission to write plays for a couple of theatres, as well as working with a couple of TV production companies to create new drama series.

What did you enjoy most about your degree and what skills did it help you gain?

Above all else, what I enjoyed most about my degree was sharing the experience with Ami, Cath, Chris, J-Ro, Ruth and Vicky – A.K.A The Granville Massive: Friends for life. I also had the beautiful opportunity of taking part in the Erasmus Scheme which allowed me to spend six months in Thessaloniki, Greece – a vital programme for connecting people and broadening world views.

What is your top tip for other students looking to study your degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University?

For those looking to do it: Do it. For those who've chosen to do it: keep a journal, keep it safe and write something in it every day, even if only a couple of lines.
