PhD English Studies

"What I love best about the university is its willingness to engage with the public"

About My Degree

I’m just finishing a PhD in English Studies at MMU. I first came to the university as an outreach student; I was an English teacher doing professional development. When the opportunity arose to do research within the department, I jumped at the chance. What I love best about the university is its willingness to engage with the public. I’ve been a part of both the Gothic Manchester festival and the Humanities in Public programme, and we found thousands of people who were interested in what we do. It’s a great opportunity for me personally, but more importantly we’re taking our research out into the world – and I think that’s a vital part of any university’s mission.
