Sustainable food policy

Read our policy

We have achieved a two star “Excellent” rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA). This certifies our commitment to sustainability and places us within the top 50% for the North West.

This accreditation measures our practices across sourcing, society and environment, involving healthy eating, community engagement and energy efficiency, for example. We have commendable practices across all three areas and are committed to best practice across the industry.

We have also been awarded a Good Egg Award, which recognises our policy to only use free-range eggs in our food. All our fish is Marine Stewardship Council accredited from a certified supplier, which ensures that fish are caught from certified sustainable sources. The meat used in our kitchens is Red Tractor Assured from our butcher, which guarantees high welfare of the animals. All our bottled water is supplied by One Water, which funds sustainable water projects in Africa.

Local, seasonal, fairtrade

As a member of The University Caterer’s Organisation (TUCO), all products are procured from suppliers who demonstrate their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. TUCO is committed to health and well-being, and sustainability best practice.

We also endeavour to purchase local and seasonal produce to support local suppliers wherever possible. We have been fairtrade accredited since 2010 -all our coffee and tea is fairtrade and we stock a wide range of fairtrade goods including snacks and fruit juices.

The University also provides fresh water fountains in all buildings. We offer drinks bottles for sale in our units, which can be filled at the fountains, and also reusable cups for hot drinks.‌

We have been awarded a Good Egg Award by The Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. This is in recognition of our policy to only use free range eggs in our food.
