The First Generation campaign aims to raise £1 million to fund a new scheme that will target young people who will be the first generation in their family to go to university.
Already, First Generation is inspiring people across the region – staff, students, alumni, businesses and partners – to support the campaign. We invite you to find out how the scheme will help to transform the lives of the young people who take part, and why our supporters are choosing to help them.
“First Generation is about waking up ambition and allowing people to achieve their personal best.”Professor Malcolm Press, Vice-Chancellor and campaign donor, explains how the First Generation scheme will transform lives and make a difference to society.
“I've seen first-hand the effects of poverty and lack of opportunity, especially in BME communities. First Generation will break down so many of the barriers to success that young people face.”Mohammad Habeebullah OBE JP, First Generation Donor and alumnus
“I was the first in my family to go to university. Thanks to my education, I have had a wonderful career and I want everyone else, whatever their background, to have the same opportunity.”Dame Dianne Thompson DBE, First Generation Donor, University Chancellor from 2011-16, honorary graduate and alumna
Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to being a fully inclusive institution, open to all with the talent to succeed, regardless of background. We believe that a university experience can change a person’s life and provide new opportunities.
The First Generation campaign will fund a new scheme to help the brightest young people to secure an undergraduate place at university and then provide continued financial, professional and personal support throughout their studies and into their careers.
Those that take part will be the first generation in their family to go to university and will have excelled in their GCSEs and then progressed to Year 12 at a local college.
The scheme starts with pre-entry, including a residential summer school, support with applications and peer mentorship from students with similar life experience.
Students successfully completing the pre-entry elements and subsequently applying to Manchester Metropolitan will be eligible for the University’s Unconditional Offer Scheme.
During their studies, those that choose to come to Manchester Metropolitan will benefit from an academic and professional (graduate) mentor, the chance to help the next generation as a Student Ambassador, a Year 1 residential experience and a First Generation scholarship.
The result for students is a scheme that breaks down barriers before, during and after university. The result for Manchester and the UK is talent unlocked, potential achieved, and lives changed.
The more we raise, the more young people will benefit.
The First Generation scheme can only happen with the generous and visionary support of our alumni, friends and partners. Click on a link below to make a gift, learn more about fundraising on behalf of the campaign or contact us directly to speak about how you can support First Generation.
