Poetry and Psychoanalysis: Creative Borders and Boundaries Conference

Beyond the Couch - a conference organised by The Institute of Psychoanalysis

Date: Friday 9th – Saturday 10th June 2017

Venue: The Institute of Psychoanalysis, London

Ticket price: £45 (Separate tickets available for Friday evening: £10 or Saturday: £35)

‘In the dark times
Will there also be singing?
Yes, there will also be singing.
About the dark times.’

Bertolt Brecht

The European Referendum and the U.S. presidential election have brought to the fore human anxieties about borders and boundaries, providing a platform for some to voice their fears and hatred. Clinicians often confront the boundaries that their patients cannot bear, judging precisely when and how to speak of what may be very private and deeply felt. The poet and the psychoanalyst try to reach their readers or patients, touch them, communicating what there might be no words for – working on the borders of something in order to illuminate rather than condemn.

The conference opens on Friday evening with a lecture by Annie Freud on poetry and consciousness; this will be followed by poetry readings from poets Kayo Chingonyi, Emily Berry, Paul Stephenson and W N Herbert.

Saturday consists of a series of lectures, readings and panel discussions. Psychoanalysts and poets will explore psychoanalysis, creativity and politics, the boundaries within and the intersection between these disciplines.

In conjunction with the conference, The Institute of Psychoanalysis are launching a Poetry and Psychoanalysis Competition, judged by Beatrice Garland. Shortlisted poets will be invited to perform their poems live at the event on Saturday 10th June. The competition has no theme and the closing date for entries is Sunday 9th April. The first prize is £1000, the second prize is £250 and the third prize is £100.
