Manchester Writing: Patrick Marnham at the Burgess Foundation
The Manchester Writing School at MMU and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation are delighted to present special guest Patrick Marnham.

Patrick Marnham was born in Jerusalem in 1943 and educated at Downside and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. After being called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1966 he became a reporter on Private Eye and has since contributed to many newspapers and magazines in England, France and America. He has worked as a BBC script writer and broadcaster. In 1977 he was commissioned by the Minority Rights Group to travel through West Africa to write a report on famine and drought. He was a special correspondent in Uganda during the period of Idi Amin, and in El Salvador and Guatemala during the 1980’s civil war. He has been literary editor of the Spectator, and was the first Paris Correspondent of The Independent. Patrick is the author of 12 books including Fantastic Invasion: Dispatches from Africa and So Far From God: a Journey to Central America. His work has been translated into ten languages and he has won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Prize, the Marsh Biography Award and was nominated for New York’s Edgar Allen Poe Award in 1994.

Manchester Writing is a new series designed to explore the techniques authors use and choices they make when writing, and debate issues arising from their work. Patrick will be reading from and talking about his work and in conversation answering questions from the audience. The evening will open with a short reading from original fiction by students of the Manchester Writing School. Drinks will be available to purchase from the bar, and there’ll be a special Blackwell’s bookstall, with signing after the event.
