How Are Young People’s Votes, Voices and Activism present in DevoManc?

Aims of the Event: To create a dialogue between academic scholars and
young people already engaged in politics and activism in Greater Manchester
about the prospects for young people having a greater influence in the devolved
politics of Greater Manchester. To explore democratic politics in its broadest sense, including the links and
separations between voting and political parties, online organising and campaigns, and ‘post-politics’ direct action.
Introduction and Welcome
10.15– 11.15 Workshop 1 - formal politics
Professor Nigel Thomas and Dr Andy Mycock will consider traditional democratic modes of participation and some of the current proposed policy initiatives such as lowering the voting age and National Citizen Service.
11.15- 12.15 Workshop 2 - informal politics
Dr Grainne McMahon and Janet Batsleer will consider the role of social media as a form of informal participation, raising important questions about feminist activism.
Lunch 12.15 – 1.00
1.00 -1.45 Workshop 3 – post-politics
What about movements like ‘Occupy!’ that reject the current political system all together. What is their role? Dr Cassie Earl will lead on this session.
1.45 – 2.30 Panel Discussion of the Days events

3.30- 5.00pm
For those unable to attend the day time event we will run a resume of the day between 3.30-5.00pm, with 5 minute summaries of all the above sessions followed by a choice of workshops and concluding with The Noise Upstairs.
These public engagement events are all part of the Partispace project, which is researching young people's participation in civic and democratic life across eight European cities and there will be further linked events throughout 2017.
