Event 3 - March 23rd 'Sites of Resistance: Giving Voice to the Next Generation'

The final session will provide an activist space within which young people from local communities impacted by crime and criminalisation can make their contribution to the debate.

This event seeks to provide a space for the next generation to further develop their critical voice. One which challenges the harmful effects of discriminations and inequalities in the process of criminalisation, experienced every day in their communities. We believe that, as the voice of the next generation, it is these young leaders, activists, academics and all young people seeking to take a role in their communities, who can ultimately shape effective sites of resistance in the future.

We are thrilled to have Temi Mwale from London’s 4Front project as part of the penal for this session.

Event conveners

The ‘Sites of Resistance’ events are convened by Kathryn Chadwick, Becky Clarke and Patrick Williams from the Sociology Department at MMU. It is our view that constructs of ‘crime’ and the process of criminalisation should be subject to academic and political challenge. Yet we know that definitions of ‘crime’ and the state’s response to the ‘crime problem’ continue to have a disproportionate impact within certain communities. Through our teaching, research and wider work with communities we are seeking to examine and expose the marginalisation and criminalisation of particular groups, reflected in the continued ‘othering’ of individuals in society generally, and criminal justice specifically.
