We offer a wide range of postgraduate research opportunities. Students may study for either MA/MSc by research, MPhil or PhD. Each of these degrees is awarded for independent study resulting in a thesis.

The award titles reflect the different levels of attainment in terms of scope and outcome, ranging from Masters level programmes, which are characterised by advanced independent study alongside training in research methods, to doctoral programmes where there is an expectation of a significant original contribution to academic or professional knowledge.
Study may be undertaken on either a full-time or a part-time basis. There is an expectation that a full-time student should normally devote on average at least 35 hours per week to research; a part-time student on average at least 12 hours per week.The award titles reflect the different levels of attainment in terms of scope and outcome, ranging from Masters level programmes which are characterised by advanced independent study alongside training in research methods, to doctoral programmes where there is an expectation of a significant original contribution to academic or professional knowledge.
Where an individual’s circumstances change in the course of their programme of study, it is possible to apply to transfer between full-time and part-time attendance.
Research degrees are avaiable to study on-campus or through distance learning.
