The Romani Community of Manchester: History, Roots and Contemporary Situation

About the Lecturer:

Professor Yaron Matras is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Manchester, and Editor of the journal Romani Studies. His involvement with Romani issues began in the advocacy and civil rights arena. He was media relations officer to the Roma National Congress from 1988 to 1995, and founding editor of RomNews, one of the very first advocacy information services on Romani issues. He has worked closely with The Open Society Institute’s Roma programme, is a founding member of the European Academic Network in Romani Studies, and has led several large scale research projects on Romani language and culture, including an international research consortium on Romani migrations. A fluent speaker of Romani language, Professor Matras is the author of over a dozen books and numerous chapters and articles. His most recent publications include I Met Lucky People: The Story of Romani Gypsies (Penguin 2014) and The Romani Gypsies (Harvard University Press 2015).

Fee details:

There is no compulsory fee, but a voluntary contribution of £ 2.00 per lecture will be appreciated by the University. The lectures are part of the University’s Public Engagement Strategy for “bridging the Gap between MMU and the Public”, and all contributions will be donated to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity
