Dr. James Renton is Reader in History in the Department of English and History at Edge Hill University, and Honorary Senior Research Associate in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College, London. His research interests are focussed on the modern history of the Middle East, British foreign and imperial policies towards that region, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. He is the author of a challenging book and several specialised articles on the Balfour Declaration of 1917, and how ultimately the Israeli state and the conflict were born as a result of the unintended consequences of British attitudes towards Zionism and the Palestinians during the First World War.
