Introduction

From ancient civilisations and great empires to the roots of our modern society, history is a vast landscape to explore and understand. Study history with us and you’ll encounter war, upheaval, injustice, invasions and revolutions – whether it’s the streets of ancient Rome, the urban growth of Manchester or the rise of modern social movements, stepping into the past will offer you the chance to discover your future passions.

Whichever era or aspect of history fascinates you, we have the expertise to support you. Our lecturers work across a broad range of chronological and global history which means our programme is flexible and allows you to develop your own specialisms as a historian. In every period we study, our courses seek to develop different approaches and methods to understanding the past, embracing political, social, and cultural history. We foster the practice of history as an inclusive discipline, and recognise that powerful ideologies of race, gender and social status have shaped our past and our present. We want to help you take your next steps beyond university as a versatile, articulate and confident graduate, ready for whatever path you choose to follow!
