Leadership and management

Good leadership and management are critical to the success of the University and supporting the development of leadership and management capability continues to be a staff development priority.

Leadership and Management Competency Framework

The University’s leadership and management framework describes the key competencies that all leaders and managers should be working towards within our University. Each area of the framework contains descriptions of generic behaviours that would be apparent if someone is demonstrating the competency and development indicators to signal where improvement is required.

Leadership and Management Programmes

We provide a range of courses to develop leadership and management capability. The Advancing your Leadership and Management Confidence and Capability Programme is our core offer for all those with a leadership or management element to their role. This learner-centric programme builds self-awareness, confidence and initiative. Participants explore their strengths and weaknesses, reflect on their values, beliefs and personal approach, consider how they relate to others and develop personal action plans.

We offer specific programmes for first line, middle and senior managers, including academic managers. A number of our programmes are offered with the opportunity of an ILM qualification. We are an accredited Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Centre, which allows individuals to build their career by gaining a national qualification.

Visit the ILM page in the current staff section for further details.

Management Development

We also offer a number of podcasts to help managers to deal with policy based staff management issues. These include podcasts about sickness absence management and the PDR process. These are all available via MMUtube

Anyone who is planning to be part of a recruitment panel is expected to participate in HR Recruitment Skills training. The exception to this is where a manager has completed similar training with their last employer, and within the last 12 months, they can apply to have their prior learning recognised by filling out the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) form.

For panel chairs, there is a half-day workshop, HR Recruitment Skills – Chairing. This can be the equivalent to the HR Recruitment Skills training for those who have considerable experience in recruiting staff.

Coaching and Mentoring

We also offer support for managers to develop their coaching and mentoring skills. Coaching and mentoring are development techniques based on the use of one-to-one discussions to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge or work performance. These are essential skills for managers.

We offer one day workshops or longer programmes to develop coaching and mentoring skills. We also provide guidance to help you plan mentoring, either for yourself or members of your team.

All the courses we offer are available on myHR.
