About Us

The Journalism, Information and Communications section (part of the Department of Languages, Information & Communications) provides undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of information, library and information management, digital media, web development, communications and multimedia journalism.

The department’s history goes back nearly 70 years and it has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The department works collaboratively with the media industry and the library and information professions, in addition to developing research partnership agreements in the public sector.

The department offers its own unique social learning space, the Multimedia Resource Laboratory, managed by a full time technical officer and featuring two teaching laboratories with the latest hardware and software, seminar and meeting rooms, plus 20 iMacs and WiFi access.

The department’s location in the north west – which boasts the second-largest digital industry cluster in Europe – creates excellent opportunities for students, as reflected in the its strong programme of guest speakers and students gaining employment in many agencies around Manchester and the region, as well as the BBC.
