Do you need to improve your English before you start your undergraduate or postgraduate programme? Then we can help!
The Language Centre offers language and academic skills courses to prepare you for your studies. General and academic English courses start in October, January and April, and there are intensive Pre-sessional courses during June, July and August designed to help you achieve the level of English language proficiency you need to start your degree programme, without needing to take another IELTS.
A pre-sessional English course at Manchester Met is not just a language course. You will continue to study the four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), as well as grammar and vocabulary, but you will concentrate on your use of English in an academic environment. We will also introduce you to the academic skills that you will require on your degree course. You will leave the course feeling more confident about your English language ability and about the expectations of UK academic culture, meaning you are better able to meet the demands of your degree. In addition, you will become familiar with the workings of the University, the city centre campus and Manchester itself ahead of starting your main degree course.
You will have 21 hours of lessons per week, including Conversation Club and Guest Lectures. We will test your readiness for university study with our own internal assessments. We do not use IELTS as the end-of course assessment. Our assessments reflect the skills you learn in your classes and the skills you will need on your degree.
English for University Study (EfUS) is designed to improve your English language ability in all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) to the equivalent of IELTS 5.5 overall and start to prepare you for the academic skills you will need at university. Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress on to one of our Pre-sessional courses (usually the 10-week course).
You will have 21 hours of lessons per week, including Conversation Club, Reading Club and ICT Skills. You will also have a weekly Review class to help you identify which areas of your English need most improvement. Every week you will complete a short written task and progress test in class in order to highlight your progress; you will then discuss your progress in regular tutorials with your Personal Tutor.
All our tutors are qualified and have many years’ combined experience of preparing international students for academic study.
