Our English for University Study (EfUS) is our most flexible English language course with three intakes per year and different course lengths to choose from. This course is perfect for you if you want to study English for a longer period of time or if you don’t yet meet the entry requirements for our Pre-sessional course. You do not need to have a degree offer from Manchester Met to study on this course.

English for University Study (EfUS) is designed to improve your English language ability in all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) to the equivalent of IELTS 5.5 overall and start to prepare you for the academic skills you will need at university. Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress on to one of our Pre-sessional courses (usually the 10-week course).

You will have 21 hours of lessons per week, including Conversation Club, Reading Club and ICT Skills. You will also have a weekly Review class to help you identify which areas of your English need most improvement. Every week you will complete a short written task and progress test in class in order to highlight your progress; you will then discuss your progress in regular tutorials with your Personal Tutor.

Conversation Club is an opportunity to improve your spoken fluency. You will have the opportunity to speak to native speakers on a variety of topics and in a more informal setting. You will also develop a range of useful conversational phrases to use in a variety of social settings – perfect practice for our Coffee Club and social programme activities. By the end of the course, you will be much more confident with your use of English, both in everyday situations and social interaction, as well as in an academic environment.

You can join EfUS in October, January or April depending on your level of English now, and study for one, two or three terms. To apply, you will need to show us a valid academic IELTS certificate from a certified UKVI IELTS Centre. Successful completion of our EfUS and/or Pre-sessional courses will allow you to progress onto a Manchester Metropolitan degree programme (as long as you have met all other conditions) without needing to take another IELTS test.
