Uniwide Languages

A warm welcome to all new students and staff, and to all who are thinking about doing a language.

Opt for a Language

Why learn a language?

Foreign language knowledge provides a clear advantage in today's job market and is a great way to enhance your CV; language skills help you show awareness of other cultures and help make you a real 'citizen of the world'

Language lessons involve lots of communicative and interactive activities. You will interact with native-speaker tutors and other learners in a collaborative atmosphere. If you opt to join our Uniwide classes, you can meet students from all over the university.

The rates of progression and satisfaction ratings are high. You will have a great story to tell future employers and you’ll pick up a range of transferable skills.

Who can study a Uniwide Language?

Our Uniwide languages are available to students who are able to swap a module from their main degree. You can study from beginner level (regardless of your year of study). We also offer a range of higher levels*.
* Languages and levels run subject to student numbers. Not all levels may be available every year.

Languages Available:

The following languages are available to study*: French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Modern Standard Arabic and English as a Foreign Language (for non-native speakers).

Enrolment:

Thank you for choosing Uniwide Languages as an option for the next academic year starting in October 2024. Rest assured, the Uniwide Languages team will get in touch during the summer months to invite you to an enrolment event to check your language level and add your preference language class to your timetable.

When do the units run?

The Uniwide language units will run in Semester 1 (starting in September/October) and in Semester 2 (starting in January/February), alongside your other units. The classes will take place twice a week for a total of 3 hours per week on campus.

Mode of study:

15 Credit Units

If you are taking a language as a 15-credit unit, you will study the language either in Semester 1 or 2 depending on the level and subject availability and timetabling considerations. The Beginner level in most languages will be offered in semester 1 and again in semester 2 to suit the requirements of different timetables.

You will be assessed in speaking, listening, reading and writing. You will do four elements of assessment on this unit during the semester. These elements are spread out across the semester.

30 Credit Units

If you are taking a language as a minor route on your degree (e.g., Main Subject WITH a language), you will study the language in both Semesters 1 & 2 (15 credits in Semester 1 + 15 credits in Semester 2). You will do four tasks for your assessment in each semester to ensure that you are making progress in the language.
