Each member of our network is committed to progressing language pedagogy by carrying out active research into multimodal approaches to teaching and effective use of films, media, visual literacies and audio-visual material in the classroom.

Dr. Noa Talaván, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Spain) 

Dr. Noa Talaván holds a senior lecturer position in the Foreign Languages Department at the Universidad Nacional de Educaion a Distancia (UNED), Spain, where she teaches mainly in the areas of Translation, English for Specific Purposes and CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning). She is a member of the ATLAS research group and her main fileds of research are audiovisual translation, mobile learning and foreign language education. She is currently taking part in two research projects: a national project called SO-CALL_ME on Mobile Learning Applications in Language Learning (as part of ATLAS group) and a European project – Lifelong Learning Program – called Clipflair, Foreign Language Learning through Interactive Revoicing and Captioning of Clips (as an associate partner). She is collaborating with the FLAME research group through co-supervision of PhD student Alicia Sánchez Requena.

Dr. María del Carmen Fonseca Mora, Universidad de Huelva (Spain) 

Dr Carmen Fonseca-Mora is Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Philology at the University of Huelva, Spain, where she has been also Vice-Chancellor for Lifelong Learning Programs and Innovation till 2012. Her main research interests are affective factors, musical aptitude and media education in language learning. Her work has appeared in a significant number of academic journals and edited volumes. She has lectured in Germany, Portugal, France, Italy, England, Sweden, Peru, United States and Spain. She is currently co-editor of the English Edition of Comunicar journal, a media education research journal. She is collaborating with the FLAME research group with a project on Music and Cognition in Language Learning. 

Dr. Manuela Escobar, Universidad de Sevilla (Spain) 

Dr Manuela Escobar is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Seville in the English Language Department, where she teaches English language for Finance and Accountancy and English for the Tourism Industry at Undergraduate level, and Terminology and Translation in a Master Degree. Her research interests include Teaching English as a Foreign Language and Translation Studies. She is a member of the Research Project La Enseñanza de Lenguas Extranjeras: Tareas con Contenido (Ref FFI 2010-19022). She is collaborating with the FLAME research group with a project on Audio Description and Language Teaching.

Mr Tomás Costal Criado, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Spain)

Tomás Costal is FPI-UNED researcher in the Department of Foreign Languages at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED, Madrid, Spain), and holds an MA in Teacher Training and an MA in Translation for International Communication. His research interests include media accessibility, audiovisual translation, language teaching and semiotics. He is the co-author of Traducción y accesibilidad audiovisual (Editorial UOC, 2016).

Mrs Jessica Frye

Jessica lectures on the MA Teaching English as a Foreign Language (units Technology in Language Teaching and Film Pedagogy) and MA Applied Linguistics (unit Corpus and Lexical Studies). She is a co-founder of the Film in Language Teaching Association and offers teacher training and teacher development session on the use of media and corpus linguistics in the language classroom as part of FILTA and Routes into Languages Northwest. Her interests lie in the development of flexible materials for use in any language exploiting silent/dialogue-free short films and she is involved in a number of outreach activities for students.
