Film, Languages and Media in Education
Film, Languages and Media in Education (FLAME) is a pioneering research group at Manchester Metropolitan University established in 2013 and dedicated to the development of research and knowledge exchange activity in the areas of Pedagogy, Languages, Film and Media.
The FLAME Research Group includes a steering group at Manchester Metropolitan University and an expansive network of international research associates, affiliated members and institutions working in partnership to further Film, Languages and Media in Education research.
Each member of the FLAME Research Group is committed to progressing language pedagogy by carrying out active research into multimodal approaches to teaching and effective use of films, media, visual literacies and audio-visual material in the classroom. Research demonstrates how such approaches are beneficial to both learner and teacher and should be integrated into language teaching curriculum and educational contexts around the world.
The multidisciplinary nature of Film, Languages and Media in Education research allows for great breadth in the work carried out. Our research relates to Languages, Linguistics, Translation, Psychology, Sociology, Technology and Education, in addition to other areas. Core areas of research include:

We are dedicated to developing scholarship and publication in our key areas of research, including doctoral research supervision and the organisation of conferences and other knowledge-exchange events. We aspire to grow a national and international network of likeminded scholars, researchers, associates and institutions who will collaborate with us. We very much welcome proposals for MA by Research, PhD and MPhil in areas related to our core research.

Currently, the FLAME Research Group is involved in the development of modules for the Applied Linguistics and the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programmes at Manchester Metropolitan University. We welcome PhD and MPhil applications within, but not limited to, any of the following key areas of Research.
