Biography
I’m a radio journalist by background and worked at BBC World Service News and Current Affairs for about 15 years. I studied Russian at university so I found myself working all over the Former Soviet Union, including a year in Tashkent. As well as World Service, I’ve worked at BBC Scotland, 5Live and the BBC’s political unit. I’ve also made features for Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.
These days, my interests are in digital and data journalism and the growing need for journalists to have good tech skills.
When I’m not working, I’m cycling or running - or, more often, recovering from sports injury.

In September 2014, I launched the Manchester chapter of Hacks/Hackers, a global grassroots movement bringing together journalists and technologists to rethink the future of media.
Teaching
Why do I teach?
Journalism is a wonderful career which can take you in so many unpredictable directions. It’s changing rapidly and that makes it an exciting time to be teaching the skills the next generation of journalists are going to need. There are jobs opening up for journalists now that didn’t even exist when I left the BBC. That’s the challenge for those of us teaching journalism and it’s a challenge I really enjoy.
How I’ll teach you
I believe we all learn best when we’re doing. So my classess are interactive with an emphasis on the students doing things rather than just listening. I also believe that learning is a social process so there will be lots of collaborative working in small groups.
