About Sports Massage

Sports massage aims to restore muscle health through massage, stretches and friction. It focuses on soft tissues, muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

There are several techniques used in sports massages to help restore muscle health.

At the Manchester Movement Unit, qualified sports massage therapists perform our treatments, and they tailor the massage to your individual needs.

Other Massage Options

Thai Yoga Massage

Originated in Thailand in the second millennia BC, Thai Yoga Massage is a form of bodywork that combines dynamic assisted stretching influenced by Yoga, and physical pressure along energy lines influenced by Chinese acupuncture.

The difference from other forms of massage is that there is no oil used and the patient remains fully clothed throughout the session. The massage is performed on a mat on the floor instead of a table.

Pregnancy Massage

Performed after the 16th to 20th weeks of the pregnancy, never before and a disclosure from the doctor saying it is fine to receive treatment.

It is all about gentle strokes and stretching laying on the side, avoiding certain areas and providing a lot of comfort through a lot of pillows! It is advisable to bring a light snack like a piece of fruit and water for after the massage.

  • What are the benefits of a sports massage?

A sports massage causes physical changes to your body’s tissues by increasing the amount of blood, and therefore oxygen, to an area and muscle.

Massaging the muscles via techniques such as stroking and deep tissue massage increases the blood to the area.

When performing deep tissue massage, the tissues heat up and effectively become more pliable, causing increased amounts of movement in the tissues and surrounding joints.

Sports massage is an excellent treatment method for problems such as tight calves, low back pain, and tension around your neck.

As well as improving your range of movement, pain and anxiety are often reduced during a massage.

This is because endorphins (known as the ‘feel-good’ chemicals) are released during treatment, helping you to feel more relaxed, less tense and able to move more freely.

    A good sports massage will:

    • relieve muscle pain and tension
    • improve connective tissue healing, improving muscle flexibility, which reduces and prevents injury
    • reduce recovery time after an injury and help rehabilitate an injury
    • reduce heart rate and lower blood pressure
    • improve circulation and lymphatic flow
    • remodel scar tissue when required
    • assist in the removal of metabolic waste
    • sedate or stimulate nerve endings
    • lower anxiety, decrease stress and improve mood
    • improve sleep quality
  • What should I expect from my first treatment?

At your first appointment with the Manchester Movement Unit, your sports massage will begin with a short consultation.

Your massage therapist will discuss your present state of health and any related medical history.

Your consultation will take into account your lifestyle, your general health and well-being, and the stresses and strains on your body.

After this, your sports massage will last 30 minutes.

Your massage therapist will focus on the areas of your body you have indicated need addressing or are particularly tight.

We recommend that you wear loose-fitting clothing so that your sports massage therapist can easily access the muscles they need to work on.

You might need to take off some of your clothing so that your therapist can get to certain muscle groups, so we suggest bringing a vest and shorts to help you feel more comfortable.
