Helping manage anxiety through a healthy diet

MetMUnch and Anxiety UK team up for a new project on nutrition and mental health

MetMUnch at Manchester Metropolitan University has teamed up with Anxiety UK to help educate people on how nutrition can help them better manage their condition.

Food can impact how people are feeling, with vitamins and minerals such as iron, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and zinc having a major impact on mood and energy levels. Cases of anxiety have been continually rising, with 8.2 million being reported in the UK alone in 2013.

Nutrition experts at the University will deliver the weekly anxiety and nutrition phone-in service, where people will get up to 10 minutes to learn some tips about how they can eat healthily to help manage any anxiety they may be experiencing.

Haleh Moravej, Senior Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences and founder of MetMUnch - the student network promoting sustainable and nutritious food, will deliver the new project with the leading charity.

Eating healthily

Haleh Moravej said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Anxiety UK to help their members to better understand how they can eat healthily by following a sustainable and balanced diet while also taking steps to help address their anxiety, stress and anxiety-based depression by following some simple nutritional tips.”

Anxiety UK’s Chief Executive Nicky Lidbetter said: “We’re delighted to launch this exciting new project with Haleh, MetMUnch and Manchester Metropolitan University as we know there is growing evidence of the direct link to our mental wellbeing and what we eat.

“We expect this to be the first phase of what promises to be a valuable addition to the support and services we can offer our members.”

MetMUnch will also be delivering regular Twitter chat sessions where Haleh will provide evidence based nutritional information to Anxiety UK followers on the social media platform.
