MMU Sport is celebrating a successful season after a record 12 clubs secure promotion.

Manchester Met’s teams will finish on a high as 14 win their BUCS (British University and Colleges Sport) league, with 12 receiving automatic promotion – four more than last year.

Notable achievements include Women’s basketball going the whole season undefeated, Netball 1st winning the league with three games still to go and all three of the Rugby Union BUCS men’s teams winning their respective leagues.

And for some, winning the league was not quite enough.

For the first time in the club’s history, men’s Water Polo went on to become BUCS National Champions at BUCS Big Wednesday in what started as an easy, early lead went on to become a nail-biting 9-8 victory against reigning champions Durham.

The annual competition took place at the University of Nottingham, where Manchester Met were also represented by Lacrosse and Netball – who both won their Cup finals to make it three out of a possible three wins.

Moving forward

This success comes not long after BUCS Nationals where Manchester Met students went up against some of the country’s top university athletes to bring home a Gold and Bronze medal in swimming and a Bronze in the men’s triple jump.

Performance Sport Manager, Jérôme Read said: “Since 2015, we have remodelled our performance sport support. The 2017/18 results have shown the groundswell that can now snowball as we move forward with stronger cohorts of student athletes who proactively choose  Manchester Met as a university to pursue their dual career ambitions.

“Representation in all faculties from our dual career athletes support the research that sports athletes will choose to study in many academic fields."

More to come

However, not all teams can rest easy just yet.  Netball and Rugby League 1sts still have everything to play for as they focus on April’s play-off finals, where they could both secure promotion spots in next season’s premiership north division.

Teams will also be competing in Rugby 7s, Rugby League 9s and Lacrosse 8s tournaments whilst MMU Athletics will travel south to Bedford in May for the BUCS outdoors athletics championships.

Jérôme added: “We’re not done yet, so stay tuned and watch this space.”
