Manchester Met's Chinese Society
Open to all students, the MMU Chinese Society has over 200 members and runs regular activities and events.
We spoke to Anika, Chair of MMU Chinese Society, to find out how they celebrated Chinese New Year, what other events and activities they do together and how students can join.
"The MMU Chinese Society was established in 2015, with the aim to provide a platform for all Chinese students and students interested in Chinese culture to join, make friends and share their lives in Manchester. At the beginning we only had six members, but now we have over 200 members who have joined our Facebook group so far.
As a society, we have weekly meetings and monthly events, including visits to local care home, movie night, a welcome event, hot pot and Chinese New Year Dinner Social for our monthly event for this academic year. We have also visited the Didsbury Good Neighbours to promote Chinese New Year last academic year.
This year, we celebrated the Chinese New Year with more than 70 students. The Chinese New Year Dinner Social is a collaborative event with Multicultural, KPOP, Islamic, Welsh and British Asian societies and was held in Tai Pan Chinese Restaurant. We also had few mini games and raffles during the night itself,.
The Chinese Society is open to all students. The standard membership is £5 and members will be able to enjoy discounts for the events that we organise. MMUCS hope to host more events for the welfare of our members and possibly bridging and enhance the connectivity between various societies. You can find out about our upcoming events or more about our society via our Facebook and WeChat."
