What’s on at Manchester Metropolitan: 20-26 March

Find out about the student events and activities happening on our Manchester and Cheshire campuses next week.

From a troupe of swashbuckling students’ cynical take on The Pirates of Penzance and a pop-up British Heart Foundation shop to an exhibition that might not be all that it seems, there’s something for everybody!

Manchester

Ruse: The Artfulness of Deceit

Monday 20 March – Friday 19 May, 12pm-6pm weekdays, at the Holden Gallery.

This new exhibition focusses on things that are not quite what they seem. It is based firmly in the realm of the ordinary, but explores how this might be transformed. All of the work reflects on the shifting boundaries between reality, truth and illusion.

Carol Ann Duffy & Friends 2017: Adam O’Riordan

Monday 20 March, 7pm onwards, at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

Carol Ann Duffy DBE returns to host her hugely successful poetry and music nights at Manchester’s iconic Royal Exchange. Joining Carol Ann are new writers from Manchester Metropolitan University and a variety of established poets offering a medley of Jazz, Poetry and Conversation.

British Heart Foundation Pop-Up Shop

Tuesday 21 March, 10am-4pm, outside the Brooks Building.

The BHF pop-up shop will be selling an array of clothes, books, accessories and knick-knacks. Why not treat yourself to some pre-loved items and help raise money for the charity at the same time!

Orchard Workshop

Wednesday 22 March, 1.30pm-3.30pm, meeting at Brooks Reception.

We’re revamping the Birley Orchard and need your help! Come along to get some fresh air, meet new people and enhance your knowledge, and help us plant some new trees and wildflowers for the bees at the Birley Community Orchard. All equipment and guidance will be provided.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society Presents - The Pirates of Penzance

Thursday 23 March – Saturday 25 March, at The Union MMU.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society (MUGSS) present The Pirates of Penzance, which tells the story of Frederick, a young lad wrongfully apprenticed to a band of pirates. When he inadvertently falls in love with the Major General’s daughter Mabel, chaos ensues. Join this troupe of swashbuckling buccaneers for a cynical take on the classic tale, which is sure to have you laughing along until the final ‘tarantara’.

Sites of Resistance: Giving Voice to the Next Generation

Thursday 23 March, 6pm-8pm, at Number 70 Oxford Road.

This event seeks to provide a space for the next generation to further develop their critical voice. One which challenges the harmful effects of discriminations and inequalities in the process of criminalisation, experienced every day in their communities. We believe that, as the voice of the next generation, it is these young leaders, activists, academics and all young people seeking to take a role in their communities, who can ultimately shape effective sites of resistance in the future.

Cheshire

The Giggle Dungeon Presents: March Mayhem/Comical Bonanza

Thursday 23 March, 8pm-midnight, in the Student Zone.

Giggle Dungeon is back for a night of stand up, sketches and maybe even a song or two! Tickets are £3 on the door.
