For nurses working with older people, the complexity of care can be challenging. A new book from academics at Manchester Metropolitan University offers guidance.

The book Nursing Older People at a Glance - out today - will equip nurses who care for older people in a range of care settings including hospital, community, residential and other health or social care settings with the knowledge and skills required to care for older people in a competent and compassionate manner.

Divided into six sections, the book explores a range of themes such as person-centred care, health and wellbeing, health promotion, and the complexity of older people's care, encompassing mental wellbeing, diverse communities and learning disability.

Edited by Professor Josie Tetley, Dr Nigel Cox, Dr Kirsten Jack and Dr Gary Witham from Manchester Metropolitan University’s Department of Nursing and published by Wiley-Blackwell, the book features chapters written by other academic nursing staff at the University.

Prof Tetley, Professor of Ageing and Long-Term Conditions at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “Nurses are under increasing pressure to demonstrate that the care they deliver is supported by best evidence, compassionate, and person-centred. Our book provides an accessible overview of key concepts that can help nurses understand how care in practice can be more person-centred, while also promoting dignity, health and wellbeing.

“We hope this book will also be of value to a wide range of practitioners working in a nursing or a nurse-related capacity, for instance pre-registration nurses, health care assistants, associate practitioners, registered nurses working in both the NHS and independent care home sectors, and those returning to a career in nursing.”

Nursing Older People at a Glance is now available to purchase.
