SciBar: February

The fifth SciBar of the 2017/18 series is with Dr. Ivan Olier

February's topic is: Can machine learning reshape the way we do science?

There is no doubt that machine learning is reshaping our world. A field originated from artificial intelligence, machine learning aims at extracting knowledge from data and making predictions with minimal human intervention. We witness the use of machine learning every day. Online search, face detection, voice user interface, financial trading, healthcare, recommendation systems, smart cars, just to mention a few, are technologies where machine learning is at their deep cores. However, little is said about how machine learning is revolutionising science, speeding up the rate of discoveries, while cutting the costs of experiments. In this month’s SciBar talk, Dr Ivan Olier will offer his insights into how recent scientific breakthrough have benefited from machine learning, and what to expect in the coming years.

This event will take place on Monday 26th February from 5:30pm onwards. The talk will last around 45 mins, with a quick break before a question and answer session and the chance for further discussion while enjoying a few drinks in the cosy settings of the Lass O’Gowrie pub. No scientific background needed, just turn up and join in!
