Dr Antony Bukowski

Can you tell us about your career journey?

I’ve always enjoyed the combination of science and creativity that forms the basis for visual effects work. My first degree focused on 3D design and simulation. After University, my first job was a Knowledge Transfer Partnership working on developing aerodynamic improvements to vehicle design.

I am now a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Computer Animation and Visual Effects. I teach the FX subject area, which covers procedural design and simulation of effects for use in film or games. 

What do you enjoy about your current role? 

I enjoy seeing the sheer variety of work that colleagues and students from widely varying subjects, such as Computer Science, Games Development and Visual Effects design throughout each year.

I also appreciate being able to work with students who all see the tools at their disposal differently, and are able to leverage technical skills and their creativity to generate entirely unique work while continually problem-solving along the way.

One of my greatest highlights was seeing our first cohorts of students go on to work in their dream studios, contributing to blockbuster movies and games.

What advice would you give to students who aspire to a career in Computing and Mathematics?  

Engage with your subject, your course, and your peers. Actively participate in your own learning and enjoy the experience of doing so.

What does diversity in the Computing and Mathematics industry mean to you?  

Diversity is essential in every industry, to ensure a healthy variety of perspectives and experiences as that industry evolves.
