Three new Professors in Education:

Three new Professors of Education have joined the Faculty recently. Professor Elizabeth de Freitas joined us as Professor of STEM Education in September 2015, from Adelphi University in New York. Liz holds a Ph.D. in education and a B.A. in mathematics from McGill University, Canada. Her research has been funded by the
Canada Arts Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Canada, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. She is co-author of Mathematics and the body: Material entanglements in the classroom (Cambridge University Press, 2014), which received an Outstanding Book of the Year award from the American Education Research Association. She is co-editor of What is a mathematical concept? (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2016). Her recent research examines the material practices and bio-political dimensions of STEM activity, both recreational and expert. She also writes extensively on social
science research methodology, exploring alternative ways of engaging with digital and quantitative data, and developing experimental and speculative research methods  L.de-freitas@mmu.ac.uk

Professor Gabrielle Ivinson joined us as Professor of Education and Community from the University
of Aberdeen in December 2015. Gabrielle is Co-Investigator on the ESRC-funded Productive Margins: Regulating for Engagement Project. She works with artists to co-produce art forms and artefacts to enable young people to
communicate with persons in authority. She has been developing creative methodologies whilst working in post-industrial places with a history of dangerous, skilled manual labour supported by women’s domestic labour. She has been developing an understanding of the affective circuits of communication, bonds of solidarity and intergenerational transmission of knowledge that relates to the history and specificity of place.  She uses this understanding to bridge between communities and schools by thinking about how pedagogies expand beyond text and the spoken word. Gabrielle is leading a British Education Research Association (BERA) Commission on Poverty and Policy Advocacy, and is a co-editor of the journal Gender and Education  g.ivinson@mmu.ac.uk

Professor Moira Hulme joined us in February 2016 as Professor of Teacher Education from the University of
Glasgow, where she was a core member of the Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change.  Prior to this, she held academic and research posts at Keele University, Warwick University and the University of Wolverhampton. She has conducted a large number of funded projects commissioned by the Scottish Government, the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Education Scotland, as well as the Consortium of Institutions for
Development and Research in Education in Europe (CIDREE), BERA-RSA, UCET and the ESRC-TLRP. Her research addresses teacher education policies in the UK and internationally. Moira has published widely on teacher education and teachers’ work. She currently convenes the Special Interest Group on Teacher Education and Development of the British Educational Research Association, and co-convenes the Curriculum Innovation
